I'd qualify AI as being good with what is known, and very good at finding patterns inside of what is known that we didn't see. So AI is defo uncovering stuff. Look at what alpha fold can do and the other protein diffusion based generation systems.
But my main point is this was a very hume positive article.
When I have AI discussions with a friend of mine he always suggests I write positive views of AI, where the positive view is 'us humes won't necessarily all be replaced by AI'.
Your article speaks strongly to that point.
Will there be massive upheaval with AI? Very possibly.
Will humes be replaced entirely by AI? At this stage no. And the idea that the current training paradigm will give us machines that are very very good with what is known, but only what is known, will give us humes a lot of scope to use them to help us find out what isn't known.
So for me this was a great article that once again shed light into the areas of AI that are hidden because the money people want us to buy into the hype. Also I'd suggest the money people only care about the stuff they know they can sell. They can sell the results on the charts.
But just like the Alice question stumps most, if not all, current AI, I feel it would stump the investors too. They don't want nuance. They don't want to be aware of what the AI can't do.
There is a new religion forming. A new fervour. It is the AI gods, the AI solutions to all our issues.
I can see that they won't be yet, but I do think Alpha Fold for example demonstrates that for some tasks the bottled intelligences are fabulous.
