I completely agree.

If I were driving the US bus I'd continue with the onshoring of the workforce and the rebuilding of manufacturing capacity, but at the same time I'd invest heavily in educational initiatives to get some young folks up to speed, and I'd look at getting some experienced folk into the country, rather than scaring them away.

Tariffs are incentivising, and that makes sense when you've got an alternate to push people towards, but telling them 'sorry, buy nothing that came from overseas' is ridiculous if you don't have the equivalent in country. Tariffs then become nothing but a tax to shift money from the working class to the Government, and then in the orange man's case, from the Government to his rich friends.
